Just think about the influence your ideals bring to whatever you are writing and remember everyone has to eat.

I recently just had pieces published by the Guardian, Al Jazeera and coming up in the BBC. For the first time in years I feel like a real journalist, after years in communications (and thank you for helping with my imposter-syndrome). But the pay - while not exactly a shock as I know how badly journalism is paid - has come as a reminder that it is just not possible for me to keep my flat (I live alone) and get basics without taking income from research organizations and international orgs I have worked with in the past. I don’t feel bad about this - I think anything which allows me to write for news organizations is welcome. Where do news organizations get their money? Where do journalists in paid jobs get their money from? Advertising! Some have pension funds with shares in thousands of other companies.... so why should freelancers feel bad supplementing awful pay with other work?

This is something that really plagues me, and leads me to feel embarrassed about how I make my living even though I make it by writing and editing. I avoid telling other writers about the work I'm doing because I think they will judge me. So I cannot emphasize enough how grateful I am that you wrote this. Thank you.
