Thanks for asking the big bold money question Anna - best way freelances can get a real picture of where we stand financially is by sharing the fees and rates we get from actual clients (anonymously by all means, true facts are what matters). See also NUJ London Freelance Branch Rate For The Job pages (open to all). And.... Always ask for more! All the best Phil

Thanks Phil! I've shared data from my previous pay transparency projects with the NUJ to supplement their reporting on pay gaps ✊

This is exactly the research I’ve been looking for! I’m early in my Substack journey and have been wondering if it’s worth the extra effort to monetise and/or what it actually takes to make a decent income from Substack. I'll be watching with interest.

I'm so interested to hear the results of this. I'm not able to use Stripe where I live so I earn nothing from Substack. Currently back and forth on whether I should keep building anyway so that if things change I have an invested audience. Or do I just pack my bags and put my energy elsewhere? I don't think there's a good answer but seeing the data from the transparency project would be super helpful! Thanks so much for doing this!

Any update on your mission?

This is very interesting. Next time you do a survey like this, you might benefit from including an option for Substack creators who have more than one newsletter. Several people on here, myself included, run more than one publication under the same publisher. I couldn't fill out your survey because the lack of this option meant I couldn't accurately report since my publications have different costs, etc.
